Visual Art

Encompassing everything from oil paintings to tattoos — we want all kinds of visual art!

  • Each artist may submit up to 3 pieces, and 6 images. We recognise that in order to do justice to sculptures, for example, more than one photo of each piece may be necessary. Please don’t send more than 3 images of 1 piece.
  • Images must be high quality, crisp and clean. We don’t currently have a resolution requirement, but it’s safe to assume that if it doesn’t look great on your screen it will look pretty awful in print.
  • png or jpg files, please!
  • Name your file the full title of your work. If submitting multiple images of the same work, label each document with the title of that work, then the number you’d like them to be ordered in, e.g. “Red Roses 1” & “Red Roses 2”.

Visual art may be used as cover images and/or internal pages for our magazine.

Poetry

  • No more than 3 poems of average length. If you have 4 three-line poems you’d like to send in, give it a go! If you have poems spanning more than a page, consider sending only 1 or 2.
  • We welcome visual experiments, and suggest that poetry relying heavily on its visual aspects is sent as a pdf.
  • Start each poem on a new page.

We do not accept poetry or visual art for our online publication.

Magazine and Online Publication

Rolling submissions are always open for our online publication on Substack. Read on for information on how to submit.

We want your short story, your essay, your review, your writing that defies all genres and simply exists in all of its beauty.

  • As a general guideline, pick a nice, easy-to-read font. Times New Roman, Calibri and Baskerville are some of our favourites.
  • We accept pdf, doc and docx files.
  • Please ensure the title of your work is at the top of the page, clearly indicated.

For flash fiction

  • We would consider any short story up to 1000 words to fall under this category. You may submit 1 or 2 pieces of flash fiction at a time. If they’re all under 500 words, we will consider up to 3 pieces.
  • Start each story on a new page.

For short stories, essays, reviews / any longer form writing

  • Only 1 piece at a time for these.
  • While we don’t have a set-in-stone word limit (we’re always open to surprises!), work that exceeds 5000 words is less likely to be considered for publication. Please feel free to send in your longer works for us to take a look anyway, as we may yet be convinced.

For our online publication, we also accept pitches of incomplete works. Send us your ideas!

A note, especially for our neurodivergent authors and others with niche interests, that we LOVE essays on strange or obscure topics, and we’re desperate to learn about your most bizarre interest (as long as you’re able to make it accessible to ignorant fools like us!).

General Guidelines
  • You must be 18 or over to submit work to Teiresian. If we discover that you are under 18 and have submitted artwork for consideration, your submission will be declined and you will be barred from submitting in future, even after you turn 18.

We do not accept previously published work. We consider previously published to be any work that has been shared via a publication, whether in print or online (e.g. a magazine, journal or zine). Work that has only been shared on your personal social media profile is not previously published. If you’re unsure where your work fits, get in touch and ask for clarification.

  • We consider simultaneous submissions, provided you let us know and withdraw your submission if your work has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
  • Magazine submissions – you may submit to each genre once per issue.
  • Online pub submissions – please submit one piece at a time, and wait to hear back from us before querying again.

There is no fee for submitting your artwork to Teiresian, nor will there ever be. We strongly disagree with charging a fee for artists to share their skill, labour and time. If you would like to support us financially and aid in the longevity of this project, you’re welcome to buy the magazine or donate on ko-fi. You can also subscribe to our paid tier on Substack (launching January 2025), which has the added benefit of demonstrating the kind of work we like to publish!

What happens next?

Magazine submissions

  • You can stay up to date with submission deadlines on this page, and check our social media for more regular updates
  • We’ll begin responding once the deadline for that issue has passed. You should hear from us within a month after the deadline, depending on how many submissions we’ve received.
  • We don’t have an estimated timeline from submission deadline to publication at the moment, as we’re still at the very beginning of our life. Especially for the first few issues, you can expect a few months of edits, design, prep and production before the issue is out. Please be patient with us, and keep an eye on our social media platforms where we post frequent updates!
  • If you’re wondering what’s going on, you don’t have social media or you’d just like a personal update, you’re more than welcome to send us an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Online publication submissions

  • At the moment, our response time is generally around 2 weeks, but please allow up to a month before getting in touch if you haven’t heard from us.
  • If your work is accepted for publication, we will decide a publication date based on what we have lined up already and how long we need to edit your work. It could be a few months before your piece goes live.

If your work is accepted, we will be in touch regarding any edits we’d like to make. Please keep up to date with your emails and don’t forget to check your spam/junk folders. The sooner you get back to us and we work through edits together, the sooner we can share your work with the world!

Always check your spam/junk folders before getting in touch when you haven’t heard from us.
